I have given gemstone pendants to twelve women that are interlocked in a social web around my Sicilian family. Each stone symbolizes one of the many chemical hormones that drive women of every culture to be who they are – as mothers, daughters, sisters, partners, workers, and friends. The gems were given with three stories - of gemstone, of hormone, of woman. Artists and friends, Dana Moser and Nita Sturiale, have completed a 30-day communication exercise where they used various methods of information exchange every day without fail. These included cell phones, pay phones, Skype, text, images, email, paper letters and postcards, web-based social networks, video, and personal live meetings, both synchronous and asynchronous. Information encoding from one form to another and again into another is a dynamic virtual force upon which our culture now depends. This project was launched by Nita Sturiale and Giuseppe Taibi in collaboration with Lisa Wade and the Farm Cultural Park in the rural Sicilian town of Favara, Sicily. The project was funded, in part, by a crowd funding campaign during the spring of 2014. It began with a 2 week residency in Favara and continues at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston in the spring of 2015, when the Italian participants will visit the college for artist talks, studio visits, and an exhibition.
