Tuesdays 6:30- 9:30 pm, Room 310, Computer Arts Center, Tower Building.

Course Requirements:
¥ Be present in body - come to class.
¥ Be present in mind - participate in class discussion.
¥ Read the readings and be prepared to discuss the readings at length in class.
¥ Create a project for yourself in three parts.
¥ Completion of Mid-term Self Evaluation AND Final Self Evaluation.
¥ Completion of final project and presention of your final work to the class.

Jan 26
Greetings - class logistics; Bits, Bytes and Pixels; Computer lab logistics; Mac Graphic User Interface; Search Engines and Directories;

Required: email account and a ZIP disk,
Activity: Define computer terms + Find 2 websites that you love or hate and tell us why.
Reading: "Casting The Net" , Hafner and Lyon

Feb 2
Web Architecture; Introduction to HTML. Tags.

Activity: Make a simple text document and view it with a browser application (Netscape).
Bring in images to scan or digital files for next week!!

Feb 9
Include graphics. Low memory graphics. File formats. Scanning/Photoshop Tutorial. More HTML practice, Content - what is your idea? Who is your audience? The skills you need to learn will be determined by your idea; What are YOU curious about?

Activity: scan in at least 3 images to get started with.
Activity: Write a short description of why and how you will use the internet. Include a story board or design for your extended website.
Reading: Internet terms from PC magazine.

Reading: Envisioning Information, Edward Tufte


* Website Part 1: Make the homepage of your website with text and image(s).Due Feb 23.

Feb 16
Field trip down the hall to the MassArt Web Server and meeting with Stephane Alnet, MassArt's System Administrator.
Also - web editors - speeding up HTMLing.

* Website Part 2: add a multimedia element to your page - image map, gif animation, sound file... These will be put on Mass Art's server so that our class can access them and see how they work. Due Mar 30.
