Mission: Founded in 1994, the Zeitgeist quickly became
an artistic center for "non-mainstream community
culture". Co-founder Alan Nidle says his gallery
method is to "take in as many ideas as possible, and
use the best ones." Zeitgeist has wond the Boston
Phoeniz reader's poll for Best Gallery two times.
Financially, their "shoe-string survival" is
described
as "miraculous" and community supported.
Submission: The gallery generally schedules between
17-20 annual exhibitions, and host performances most
evenings. To arrange for an art showing, Come to the
gallery with photos or slides of work, or direct the
curators to a website hosting examples of your work.
To arrange for a performance in the gallery space,
send a tape, video tape, or CD and/or proposal, or
call the gallery to make arrangements. Also, there is
a "List of Producers" on the website who have
already
scheduled events that your performance may be able to
join. There is no "best time" to submit. The
Gallery
space is generally full about a year in advance. For
example, in Feb 2005 the next time there is an opening
is end of Dec 2005.
Performance Space. Evenings, the Zeitgeist Gallery has
a rental space available for performance (usually jazz
performance or other musical/video entertainment.
Rental of the Gallery is paid in advance, performers
are encouraged to sell tickets at door to cover the
rental fee. Rental fee increases through the week,
starting at $80 Sun/Mon, $90 Tues/Wed, $100 Thurs,
$110Fri, $120 Sat. There are additional fees for
people who need to use the PA system, doorman
services, or other miscellanious equipment facilities.
Fees/Consignment: For artwork sold through the
exhibition space, the Zeitgeist collectes a 40%
consignment fee. Artists are encouraged to place an
add in the Zeitgeist Schedule Book advertising their
show to the local community (print run is approx.
600-700 books). Ad space is approximately 5" by
8"
inches.
Jobs: The Zeitgeist seeks volunteers to gallery sit in
the afternoons, collect donations, set up and put
